So papaya king or Johnny & Hanges or Rutts Hut would have been better choices. Seriously, he eats bugs and rodents for TV glory. Eat what is good and only promote the best. Why not take him to the Bronx for clams??? And wake up, the pickle guys blew Guss out of the water three years ago. Fighting words??

DUDE!! You were hanging with Bourdain? Holy crap man, I am seriously jealous. I’m betting y’all had a blast – you better believe I’ll be tuned in next Monday. I hope you do a bit of a “behind the scenes” post, depending on your level of involvement in the show. Cheers.

Thank God someone else agrees with me about Gray’s Papaya. I see nothing particularly outstanding about their hotdogs whatsoever. Why do they still get all the press?

Zeep:
I haven’t seen it yet, so I don’t know how it turned out. I can tell you this: Tony was super nice to me. And driving around in that Checker in midtown made me feel like king of New York for the night. I totally want to own one.
JGW:
He took me for the hot dogs. I didn’t get to take him anywhere. If I could have, I would have. I had a bunch of places in mind for him. I took his assistant to Ali’s Kabab Cafe in Astoria during the scout day but, from the previews, it appears that he thought Andrew Zimmern would be better company than me there.
Also, I love Pickle Guys. I go all the time. I’ve been friends with those guys since they worked at Guss. I don’t think I need to pick sides in this pickle conflict. You only need to picks side in a war. As my boss, Tim Baker, said, “If there’s no price war, there’s no pickle war.”

I think you meant “Zimmern & Bourdain” not No Reservations.
Zimmern & Bourdain: New York
Mon (8/6) 9:00 PM-11:00 PM
The chefs return to their roots and explore New York City.

There’s your chance to call him on it. “You know that eating a beating heart of a snake thing? you know i did that before you, right? and you know for years I’ve had to explain that everytime someone said ‘like tony bourdain?’”

Wow, Dave, that’s awesome! Thanks for the heads up, I usually watch the show when I can but now I’ll be sure to tune in.

Is Bourdain a nice guy, I am big fan and don’t care either way but just curious? I don’t believe the Gray’s Papaya hype, just hotdogs whats the big deal. Good post and great site, I love the concept. I will link you.

Monday night. Travel Channel. 9-11 p.m. p.m. Eastern
I had a hard time finding it on Tivo’s schedule because it’s listed under Zimmern and Bourdain:New York rather than No Reservations.

Loved the Travis Bickle Angle but did they edit your part down or what? It would have been nice to hear somebody rail against the ever changing price of the Recession special as well. That being said it wa pretty rad congrats!

Dave, I loved seeing you on the show last night–though I really wish that you had been able to take him to one of YOUR favorite places. I thought it fairly clear that you were not overjoyed with Gray’s….
is Ali’s Kabab Cafe terrific– what should I order??
ps. I love Palma too– especially their fried artichokes!

Juree!
When you go to Kabab Cafe, just let Ali tell you what is good and let him make it for you. I like his veggies more than anything. I didn’t know that he made sweet breads though. And I’ve never had the fried artichokes at Palma. Thanks for the tip.
Blairosmith,
They didn’t really edit much of me down aside from my name. At one point, Bourdain says, “Fat Dave The Cabbie as he likes to be called.” Wrong. I LOVE being called Fat Dave The Cabbie. And I think Tony did enough railing against EVERYTHING during his walk through Times Square. The Scorsese with Bickle 44 Magnum bit was totally my idea. I’m so psyched that made the cut. Probably because I didn’t speak.

I know this is probably very naive, but any relation to Anthony?!
Blairosmith said,

Hillary, Dave is not related to Bourdain in any biological way but they have both participated in a Vietnamese Snake Feast which has to count for something.

Congrats, Dave, on your appearance on No Reservations.
I hope the exposure puts you that much closer to landing a show of your own.
That said, and take this as the compliment it is, I was hoping he would take one of your tours. You qualify as one of those elements that make NYC unique, the “underbelly” that was his overall thesis, a real NYC character. I realize that the show would have had to edit your segment anyway, but I still think they missed the boat with you. I recently caught your “Boot Of the Bronx” segment on YouTube, which completely captures in full what the No Reservations episode only caught when it kept the focus on the food. You never lose that focus.

Polecat,
Don’t I know it. They made me think I was taking him on a tour when they called me last summer, and I took his assistant out to scout. Then they told me I’d be taking him to shoot guns (I’d never touched a gun in my life) and he’d take me for Grey’s Papaya (I hate that place). Then he took Andrew Zimmern to Ali’s Kabab Cafe (where I took his assistant on the scout) and called me “Fat Dave The Cabbie as he likes to be called” on camera so I didn’t get a single extra hit because of the show. But that’s the business we call show. I still had a great time shooting it and it’s awesome to have a tape of me and Bourdain in the Checker.

Yo Dave, when is your book coming out? Please tell me you’re working on a little something something….
Administrator said,
August 15, 2007 at 11:17 pm
I gotta sell the book first. Then I gotta finish writing it. But I will promise you a little something something is on it’s way. I try to write it whenever I can which is part of why I don’t update this anymore very often. But now I’m starting grad school so it’ll get tougher. Still, it’s not rocket science (neither the book nor grad school) so I should be able to do it.

What are you going to grad school for? As someone entering their 5th year of graduate school, all I can say is don’t be a fucking idiot. Stick to what you are doing, man!
BTW, PLEASE let me know if you are ever coming to Boston because I will take you to get the most kickass hotdogs of all time at Speed’s.

Hey Dave,
I am a long time fan but have never commented to you. Just wanted to say I was estatic when I saw your face on the Food Network. I thought, “Alright they’re going to set him up to do his own show.” But then I saw how Bourdain totally dismissed you, (IMO) and then they didn’t let you talk and too, your idea of the cabbie tour to Bourdain’s own scene’s on the show. Screwed up, man. I didn’t like that one little bit and really it actually made me mad that they sent him to do cop your idea. I have friends that have been on TV and I know how the station tells you one thing and does another. I have written the Food Channel about my opinions on that segment and I hope to God that they come through for you because your better all the way around than that Bourdain guy.
