Chanukah is upon us. I’m gonna ask for my own tv show. In the meantime, take a look at today’s installment of HistoryChannel.Com’s Holiday Foods Series as we fry latkes at the Clinton Street Bakery. And if my antics aren’t enough for you, Buster Poindexter fans will be excited to hear that the Checker Cab I drive in this series is the very same one he drove in Scrooged.

Holiday Foods: Latkes

Come back here this week for a second Channukkah episode. And go to www.FamousFatDave.com to book your five borough eating tour

    Hiya Dave!
YUM! I’m not even Jewish (but my great grandfather was!), and those looked out of this world! I think that action of squeezing off the excess moisture off the potatoes is where I was screwing up when I’ve tried to make latkes or various versions of potato pancakes in the past. Hey, I learned something! Good thing it’s educational TV. I also didn’t know that fried foods were symbolic for Hanukkah. It just tells you that you can still teach an old schitczka (if I spelled that right, but you get the idea. ;-) ) new tricks.

Dave – great bit. Just one thing though – only a shikza would I would have called that clip educational. I would have liked to have seen more on the history of Channukah and its significance to the religion.

    Adam,

At history.com there isn’t much talmudic scholarship. Maybe the next video can teach you a little more, but it’s mostly the same video over again.

    Hey Adam–

I am a shikza, so sue me! I didn’t know the symbolism of the fried part with the oil, but it makes sense. And I do agree, it would be nice to learn more about the history of the holiday and the significance of the food to the religion, but it’s a very short piece, so I’m the network was only going to do so much. (And just so you know, I am 1/8th Jew, my grandfather converted, so it explains my great love of latkes, for sure! Just didn’t know how to make them. Now, from that great clip, I do know the secret that I was missing!) Shalom!

    Dani,

I didn’t know the symbolism of the fried part with the oil either. Adam is 8/8th Jewish. And he’s practically Hasidic. He’s even grown the beard a few times.
